The Michiko brand began in 1996 when founder D.H. Jun embarked on a journey to improve the skills and expertise of hairstylists with the famed Japanese scissors techniques he learned while studying in Tokyo, Japan. After almost three decades of experience, D.H. Jun and his dedicated team know exactly what is required for high-quality scissors and professional cutting.
The world's most rigorous quality standards for steel
MICHIKO shears are designed to last a lifetime, and that's why our shears are produced using steel that has been 100% manufactured in Japan.
MICHIKO shears reject entirely the notion of "planned obsolescence" that has permeated much of the manufacturing industry. The sinister strategy of intentionally designing products with a limited lifespan in order to increase future sales. We believe that true craftsman pours their heart and soul into their work, making tools that are as durable, simple to maintain, and long-lasting as they possibly can so their work will continue to serve future generations long after the craftsman is gone. Our products embody this philosophy and have been designed to last indefinitely, requiring minimal maintenance.
The Japanese tradition of Machi Koba – Small family owned urban workshops
Urban-Workshop is the literal translation of Machi Koba, which are small, specialized factories that have served as the backbone of Japanese industry for generations. Machi Koba can be found in cities and towns across Japan, and most only employ 10 to 12 people who are highly specialized in a specific type of manufacturing. Many of these Machi Koba are family-owned and have been passed down from generation to generation. Skill, hard work, and dedication to one's craft are required to work in Machi-Koba. In the Machi-Koba, where MICHIKO shears are produced, an employee typically must work as an apprentice performing menial tasks for at least 10 years before they are taught to sharpen blades.
