Urban-Workshop is the literal translation of Machi Koba, which are small, specialized factories that have served as the backbone of Japanese industry for generations. Machi Koba can be found in cities and towns across Japan, and most only employ 10 to 12 people who are highly specialized in a specific type of manufacturing. Many of these Machi Koba are family-owned and have been passed down from generation to generation. Skill, hard work, and dedication to one's craft are required to work in Machi-Koba. In the Machi-Koba, where MICHIKO shears are produced, an employee typically must work as an apprentice performing menial tasks for at least 10 years before they are taught to sharpen blades.
